As we prepare for the 2026–2027 homeschool year, I’ve carefully chosen a curriculum that blends structure with richness—balancing academic rigor with beauty, character formation, and a love of learning. This year’s plan reflects a Charlotte Mason–inspired approach combined with strong, traditional academics.
Our kiddos are in 6th, 8th & 9th grades, but we do morning basket and many core subjects together. I am tracking their assignments and tests for their high school transcript.
Here’s a detailed look at our 2026–2027 homeschool choices:
Morning Basket: The Heart of Our Day
Our school day begins with a Morning Basket, setting the tone for both learning and connection. This time anchors our routine and allows us to focus on truth, goodness, and beauty.
Note: I only do Bible studies and readings from The Morning Exercises book daily and cover other poetry, hymns, art appreciation, folksong, and music study weekly. Trying to do all in one day will be way too much for us.

- Bible Studies – Generations’ The Book of Proverbs: God’s Book of Wisdom by Kevin Swanson
This Proverbs Study Guide 1 includes Scripture, Bible Study, and Family Discussion questions that cover the core of the Book of Wisdom. - Morning Exercises for All Year: A Day Book for Teachers
We try to read from the Morning Exercises for All Year to inhabit good character and habits. - Poetry – Sing a Song of Seasons: A Nature Poem for Each Day of the Year
This beautiful collection introduces children to classic poetry tied to the rhythms of nature and the year. - Hymns – Ambleside Online selections:
We follow a rotating hymn schedule, learning both the author and the stories behind the music. - Art Appreciation – Beautiful Feet Books Art Appreciation: A Family Study:
Through guided Art Appreciation (Family Guide) lessons, we explore famous artists and cultivate observation skills and artistic awareness. After trying to print each prints and gather resources for each artist, I am very excited to try this one this year! - Folk Songs – Ambleside Online:
Traditional folksongs connect us to history and culture in a memorable, enjoyable way. - Music Study – Ambleside Online:
Composer studies deepen our music appreciation. - Unit Study:
We incorporate themed studies throughout the year, tying together holidays, events, history, science, and literature for a more immersive experience. - World Events – World A to Z:
For world events, we watch news from World A to Z, and kids enjoy learning about world events.
This portion of our day is peaceful, relational, and rich—often becoming our favorite time together that sets the tone of the day.
Core Academic Subjects
After our Morning Basket, we transition into focused academic work.
Math: BJU Press Math
We used Math in Focus: Singapore Math, but they do not have upper grade levels. So, we switched to BJU. BJU Math provides a strong, systematic approach to mathematical concepts. Its clear instruction and consistent review help build confidence and mastery. We appreciate its balance of practice and explanation, ensuring concepts are truly understood.
I find that Math in Focus is a rigorous/spiral/master based program, and BJU seemed like a good transition. However, some of my kids find it a bit repetitive.
For my younger one, I definitely want to try Math with Confidence once he turns Kindergarten. My children were always one grade ahead of their curriculum. Unfortunately, when they published grade level 5, our kids were on their grade level 6, so we were never able to try the curriculum.
Science: Exploring Creation with Physical Science (Apologia)
This year, we are diving into Exploring Creation with Physical Science, which introduces foundational concepts in physics and chemistry. Previously, we have done Berean Builders elementary curriculum. We loved that I could match the historical context to the science that kids are learning with a Christian worldview. We have also done several Apologia science courses before, which we liked, especially Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures.

History: The World's Stories 3: The Modern Age (Master Books)
We love the simple conversational tone of Master Books with good structure and assignments. We have done TruthQuest for Ancient History and Biblioplan for Medieval History. We loved TruthQuest, but there were so many resources to look through. I got so excited with new topics and new ideas to teach children that I was a bit overwhelmed. BiblioPlan was also too much work for our family. With a baby in the house, we switched to The World’s Stories 2. We will study The World’s Stories 3: Modern Age before entering their high school-level history. I will select literature based on the historical timeline as well.
Geography: This Beautiful Earth: Asia and Australia & Oceania (Simply Charlotte Mason)
We have done Visits to North America, Africa, and Europe. We love the approach of visiting each country and learning about the geography. We will continue studying geography with their new curriculum, This Beautiful Earth: Asia and Australia & Oceania.
Language Arts & Literature
- Language Lessons for a Living Education 9 by Master Books
This is our first year trying Language Lessons for a Living Education. (I have not purchased this one yet, so they are not included in the picture.) - The Good and the Beautiful Handwriting 6
This beautiful collection introduces children to classic poetry tied to the rhythms of nature and the year. - Word Roots Level 3 by Critical Thinking Co.
Our 6th grader loved Level 3, and we will be finishing this course until we are done this year and go on to Level 4.
Electives
- Logic: Introduction to Logic (Master Books)
We are introducing formal thinking skills with Introduction to Logic. This course helps students learn to reason clearly, identify fallacies, and construct sound arguments—skills that are invaluable across all subjects.
- Languages
We will be learning Spanish. I am not sure which curriculum to use at this point. - Physical Education
Our kids will be doing Taekwondo and dance this year.
Final Thoughts
With a thoughtful blend of resources and a consistent daily rhythm, we are excited to see how this 2026-2027 school year unfolds.
We went through a lot of struggles with a toddler and teens in the house last year, but I hope we can cultivate a love of learning by focusing on fun projects and still be able to keep it going strong.
