December comes with an eager expectation of Christmas celebrations of the birth of Christ.  Jesus came to save ones like us, showing true servant leadership.  For homeschooling parents, December can be rough.  December and January are definitely the most difficult months for many homeschooling parents and teachers, other than the ends of the school year.  Kids can be tired of regular routines and become antsy with all the excitements Christmas brings. In our homeschool, we tried to take most of December and beginning of January off and turn to a simpler routine and focus on good living books around Christmas, Christmas around the World unity study, and SQUILT music appreciation.  This year, SQUILT music has been a true blessing for our family.

SQUILT Music Appreciation - Over the Rainbow

Our family attended a free live SQUILT class called, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with Mr. Jim Weiss.  Our kids heard Mr. Weiss telling the Story of the World over audio in their history class and amazed that he was actually a living person, speaking to them in a live class. They were happily surprised to meet him in person.  The story of Gershwin brothers and Yip Harburg was very entertaining.  After the class, kids were singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” everywhere, over homeschooling table, over kitchen table, and over their beds.  I couldn’t help but register them for SQUILT music for “Christmas Around the World” and lessons so forth.

To a tired and exhausted homeschooling mom in the middle of December, Mary Prather and SQUILT music classes were so relieving.  It was so encouraging to see that kids can appreciate music and enjoy them.

Our kids once had a music school teacher named Mifa, named after Do Re Mi Fa… from the music notes.  Her love for kids and passion for teaching music has been a blessing for years.  We did miss her, so SQUILT music class from Mary Prather brought such joy and abundance to our family.  Our kids love Chilly Billy, not to mention that we have more than dozens of stuffed animals with their own name, their own personality, and their childhood stories.

Our first lesson was on the Carols of the Bell & Christmas story/tradition of Ukraine.

Our girls would sing the “Carols of the Bells” over and over again.  After Sweden & St. Lucia Day lesson, they made a song that rhymed like the song, “Sankta Lucia.”  Each SQUILT lesson has a lesson packet that you can accompany

Currently, we are learning about Wizard of the Oz and the Music Man  and kids learned musical musics of together.

Kids were dancing in the rain while it was pouring rain without a jacket, singing “Singing in the Rain.”

SQUILT Music: Live Classes & Lesson Packets

Live Classes are the core of SQUILT music.  Our children are able to meet Mary Prather and to develop the skills to appreciate music through the Super Quiet Uninterrupted Listening Time (SQUILT).

Each lesson is accompanied by a lesson packet through which you can follow along during the class and work on the activities like coloring pages, word searches and use supplementary resources to enrich the lesson.

SQUILT Music: The Basic Lessons

SQUILT Live includes basic lessons where new families can listen and follow along to establish the foundations, introducing them to the elements and the eras of music, and instruments of the orchestra.

SQUILT Music: Monthly Listening Calendar

Mary Prather shares her curated selections of music for each day of the month, based on a unifying theme of the month.  We enjoyed the music selections, and it saved me tons of time having to go online and search each month.

SQUILT Music: Lesson Archives

If you wish to have more lessons each month, you can always use lesson archives to access past lessons together with the lesson packets.

SQUILT Music: Communities

SQUILT music just relaunched SQUILT plus community section.  It is a platform where families can ask questions, enter contests, and build a community.
